How to Choose the Right Whiteboard Size for Your Classroom

Too small and the back bench squints. Too big and you waste wall and money. Here is the simple maths of board sizing for Indian classrooms.

Start with the room, not the board

The most common mistake schools make is buying the board first and measuring the wall later. Do the opposite. Measure the usable width of your teaching wall — excluding doors, windows, switchboards and projector screens — and note the height from the floor to any obstruction.

A board is read comfortably when its height is roughly one-fifth of the room depth. A standard 30 ft deep Indian classroom reads a 3×4 ft or 4×4 ft board well from the last bench. Deeper rooms of 35–45 ft — common in government high schools — genuinely need a 4×6 ft or 4×8 ft board.

The size ladder we recommend

For home tuitions and small rooms up to 15 ft deep, 2×3 ft is enough. For standard classrooms of 20–30 ft, 3×4 ft is the sweet spot — it is also our most-sold size to schools in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. For large classrooms, lecture halls and labs, go straight to 4×6 ft or 4×8 ft.

Height placement matters as much as size. The bottom edge of the board should sit around 30–36 inches from the floor for primary classes and 36–42 inches for high school and above. A board mounted too high tires the teacher’s shoulder within a single period.

When one board is not the answer

If your teaching wall also holds a projector screen, a single fixed board forces a daily compromise. This is exactly the problem sliding shutter systems solve — the board glides aside to reveal the screen, and you keep the full writing surface.

For L-shaped or pillar-broken walls, custom sizes beat standard ones. We routinely build boards to odd measurements — 3.5×5 ft, full corridor widths, even boards cut around switchboards. Send us the wall measurements and we will tell you honestly whether a standard or custom size serves you better.
